Should I have a Live Band or a DJ?

Choosing between a band and a DJ for a wedding depends largely on your personal preference for the atmosphere you want to create, with a live band creating an interactive energetic performance while a DJ is often more budget-friendly; if you want a more lively experience, a Live Band might be the way to go.

Key points to consider:

  • Live Energy:
A live band brings a unique energy, creating a more "concert-like"  and interactive atmosphere, which is more likely to get guests dancing and singing.

  • Music Variety:
DJs can switch between genres and will play the songs as they were first recorded, whereas the right Live Band will have a huge repertoire of songs and are able to create on the fly medleys and mashups, and adjust according to the vibe of the party.

  • Venue Limitations:
Some venues have sound limiters and if there is not much space then a sound system may not fit, meaning an Acoustic Band is the only option.

  • Set-Up/ Sound Check:
Some venues won’t have a sound system at all, so most DJs and Live Bands will be able to supply their own sound equipment at an extra cost, and will need a few hours to set it up and pack it down. A Roaming Acoustic Band won’t need any amplification, so no soundcheck or set up time is required.

  • Cost:
If the DJ brings their own sound system, the price will be similar to an Acoustic Live Band, whereas a Live Band who bring their own sound system will probably cost the most, having the most personnel and equipment.

  • Bespoke Service:
A DJ can play recordings of your favourite songs as they were made, whereas a Live Band will give unique touch to your event, whether it’s playing during a ceremony or even writing you a personalised song.

  • Something Different:
DJs will play the classics, which you can hear at home anytime. A live band will bring their own twist on your favourite songs, creating something truly memorable for your event.

When to choose a Live Band:

  • If you want a high-energy, lively atmosphere with a distinct live music feel.

  • If you have a favourite genre and want a band that specializes in that style.

  • If you're willing to spend a bit more on entertainment.

  • If you ‘re looking for a unique and interactive experience

When to choose a DJ:

  • If you want to hear the songs exactly as they were made.

  • If you are on a tighter budget.

  • If you want more control over the exact songs played at your wedding.
